Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president started showing all observers his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the determined opposition to Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

In both situations does it suggest pretending the most negative about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a combination that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
