Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
